Jenny Lewis had not fully developed her singing voice at least as much as has been today, but her songwritting was great on these first two albums from Riley Kiley.
I’m only a casual listener of her’s. I was introduced to her thanks to Ben Gibbard and his Postal Service LP, and then I moved on the Rilo Kiley’s Execution of All Things. Both incredible albums, but it’s night and day listening to those records followed by her latest, “Acid Tongue.”
On “Acid Tongue”, she really does have a much larger and more sophisticated voice. It’s hard not to draw the obvious Neko Case comparison. However, I think her simple straightforward vocals were well suited for her earlier work.
I need to post some songs off “Acid Tongue”. Digging that album at the moment and I’m a sucker for bangs.
I saw Rilo Kiley when they were touring to support the “More Adverturous” and I was sitting in the front row. She is definitely a hottie. Ah, those red heads!
Musically and to be more specific, vocally, she really pulls it off live. Great voice. Jenny Lewis seemed more comfortable on stage than Neko Case. Guys at both shows were screaming for both girls but Lewis found it easier to play it cool than Neko.
I think they will be both compared to each other for the rest of their career. I have never seen Case play solo but I had the opportunity to see her with the New Pornographers and it was one of the best live shows that I have seen in like 5 years. It felt like at any moment AC and the gang were going to motion for the entire audience to join them on stage.
I just saw AC a couple weeks ago. He tours with this Neko lookalike….not sure who she is, she does violin and some percussion. Thought it was kind of funny though……like….”lets make this switch and see if anyone notices…”
Yeah, I remember when they(new pornographers) came to Atlanta. The promoter made a big deal to point out that she was in fact going to be present for the show.
AC played the EARL in East Atlanta about a month ago. I missed it but I bought the new album. It’s good but it didn’t knock me over or anything like that.
