I was fortunate enough to attend this tour. Since I missed his DC show in October, a small pilgrimage would occur: I ended up driving about 200 miles and paying about $200 to see the performance at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, NJ on 11/4/2010. I have been a huge fan of Pink Floyd’s 1979 album since I was about 15 or 16 years old. However, given the fact I was born in 1981, I was too young to see the original 1980-1981 Pink Floyd Wall tour. But ever since the mid-1990s, it has been a dream and fantasy of mine to be at that original performance. I’ve read the books, seen the pictures and it just looked amazing, so actually having the chance to experience the show now, something I never thought would happen, has been quite literally a dream come true for me in every sense. I would have paid double. The money didn’t matter. I just knew that I could not miss this and that I would regret it the rest of my life if I didn’t see it. The original performance was ahead of it’s time and the band ended up losing money on account of the scale and logistics of the whole thing. Today is a different story. People are willing to pay a lot to see a concert, and the tour (which will cost about $60M in total to put on) is able to turn a profit. And obviously, the technology available now versus 30 years ago has improved so drastically, making for a multimedia extravaganza, and at times, a circus. It was so powerful, moving and exciting and it most definitely did not disappoint. I can’t see another concert topping it for a long time. Here are some of the best clips I’ve found on youtube of my favorite parts:
In The Flesh?
Show starts with lots of fire and even a plane crash!
Mother
“Mother should I trust the government??” (No. Fucking. Way.)
…and here is the original (but grainy) footage from 1980 Pink Floyd tour that he references, for good measure. Unfortunately, no good footage of the 1980-1981 tour has ever been released.
Goodbye Blue Sky / Empty Spaces / What Shall We Do Now?
ahhh, who could forget the sexy flowers!
Young Lust
40 foot tall naked chicks! Holllllller!
Vera / Bring the Boys Back Home / Comfortably Numb
People cried during Vera with the little girl. Follow that up with a classic guitar solo performed 40 feet in the air on top of the wall and you have yourself and emotional roller coaster. I was losing it right about now.
The Show Must Go On / In The Flesh
Channeling the Beach Boys and a Fascist dictator hallucination.
The Finale: Waiting For The Worms / Stop / The Trial
TEAR DOWN THE FUCKING WALL!!
